What you will need:
1 7/16 size wrench
1 Can of garage door lubricant from your local hardware store.
A broom or dust cloth
Begin by looking at your door hinges. Look for any hinges that appear extremely loose. Next, using the 7/16 wrench, go over every nut to make sure they are completely tight. Be careful to not over-tighten. Only tighten the nuts on hinges, but turning clockwise. Do not attempt to tighten the bottom square hinges (the ones with cables). Using the wrench, check to make sure they are secure and not loose.
After tightening the hinges, take your broom and sweep all spider webs off of the door and garage door opener sensors. This will prevent the garage door opener from malfunctioning (spider webs can trip the sensors).
Now take your can of garage door lubricant and spray the springs, hinges, wheels and opener rail. Make sure that nothing is under the rail while you are doing this. Do not overspray, as that will only make everything very messy.
The last step is to check the door weight. With the door in the down position, disengage the manual release. If you open your door one foot above the ground and it falls, this is a sign that the garage door springs need to be serviced by qualified professionals, as the extra weight of the door is putting significant stress on the garage door motor. We offer this service as part of our 89.00 garage door tuneup.
You're done! Make sure to go through this process twice a year, once in the summer and once in the winter. This will keep the entire system running smoothly with a minimal amount of friction.
